What were the main sources of conflict between china and the western powers during the 1830s and 1840s?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Does anyone know what things (such as treaties etc.) triggered the Sino-western conflict during the 1830s and 40s? Thanks everyone!

It was to do with trade.European countries (particularly Britain) got huge amounts of tea and porcelain from China. However, the Chinese refused to trade for these goods, and would only accept cash for them. Most money at this time was in the form of silver coins, and the trade with China eventually caused a shortage of hard currency in the west, particularly for Britain. This, in turn, was having a detrimental effect on the economy.
So,Britain needed a commodity that the Chinese would accept in return for porcelain and tea.The answer was opium, produced in India.Soon, Chinese merchants were happily trading tea and porcelain for opium. However, opium is highly addictive and has a very deleterious effect on those who become addicted. Before long, the Chinese Emperor recognized the negative impact of opium imports on the Chinese people and economy, and banned it,executing those Chinese merchants caught dealing in it, and taking action against the British community in the trading port of Canton (November 1839).
Britain thus began the First Opium War (1840-42) to force China to accept opium imports, and to force China to open up to foreign trade on a wider scale.

To put it differently, could the ones used in food be of pork otigin?

Monoglycerides. Glycerides. (See Glycerin.) Diglycerides.
From animal fat. In margarines, cake mixes, candies, foods, etc. In cosmetics. Alternative: vegetable glycerides

This is the definition of monoglycerides and diglycerides according to happycow.net hidden animal ingredient list.

Here is the link: http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html

Here is another hidden animal ingredients site if you want it: http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html

There is a possibility that it could be in soap, but im not sure.
You might want to try the organic section of your grocery store, they could/usually/should have animal free things like that, you just have to make sure and it depends on location and such too.

Hope this helps! =)

So I was wondering, if there was any image hosting website which allows you to delete and keep pictures you upload private?

Can I put a webpage I built online by storing files on an ftp site or do I need to sign up with a web host?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

My cable company offers me a limited amount of online storage at an ftp site. Can I use this site to put my website online?
I already have a domain name. I want the url to be www.mydomainname.com. If I use the ftp storage space provided by Comcast, would comcast.net have to be in the url?

Yes, you totally can. After you’ve uploaded the files (including at least one file called index.html) you can just browse to your FTP space address in your browser to see the site. Building webpages is pretty much what these free FTP spaces that ISPs hand out are for.

How can I buy wholesale products without the annoying bidding wars?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I’m trying to start a small business out of my home and I’ve been looking at wholesale lots online that would be perfect to add to my merchandise to resell, but every time i bid on a certain lot, the bids just get higher priced and higher… So i get outbid and have to look for diff. products.
What can i do? is there just a wholesale company that i can buy lots from instead of bidding for the lots? If anyone knows of other websites that offer this kind of service, please reply. Thanks!

Great dropshippers or sellers in bulk for apparel?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

As in apparel that would interest TEENAGERS.

Check out ebay for sellers of bulk stuff.

Also do an internet search for bulk sales.

Do not buy anything you have not personally inspected.

Will growth of online computer shopping services ultimately eliminate the need for retailers and wholesalers?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

It is noted that on-line computer shopping services like those available through AOL, Yahoo, Prodigy, and elsewhere in the internet are making it possible for individual consumers to get direct information from hundreds of companies they would not otherwise know about. In many cases, consumers can use the computer to place an order for a purchase that is then shipped to them directly. Will growth of these services ultimately eliminate the need for retailers and wholesalers? What marketing functions are involve in this "electronic purchases" and who performs them?

It will definitely get rid of physical retailers. Not wholesalers so much because they do offer the lower prices. If anything, the wholesale industry will grow because of the overwhelming competition to have the lowest prices.

Internet Stores use every option available to them. Take a look at "The Four P’s

Product – SELL ANYTHING

Place – ONLINE

Promotion – SPACE ADVERTISING & EMAIL – DIRECT MAILERS

Price – CHEAPER THAN MOST PHYSICAL STORES

This is possibly what will cause lots of these stores to close their doors, no matter what they are no competition for the internet.
