I paid for a domain name a few years back, but failed to renew it and closed the account later. Now I’m wishing I’d kept it and want to see if I can get it back. No one is using it, as far as I can tell (and it’s pretty obscure), but it comes up as "unavailable" when I search at Yahoo domains (where it was originally registered) and GoDaddy. What are my options?

Hey Allison, it’s entirely possible that we still have control of your domain and we’d like to see you get it reactivated if we can help. Without telling us the domain name, there’s no way to be sure that we have that power. So we recommend trying this option first: try reactivating directly using the steps outlined here (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/smallbusiness/billing/billing-15.html).

Failing that, give us a call at 866-781-9246, available Mon.–Fri., 7 a.m.–5 p.m. PT and we will dig in and see what we can do to help!

Hi! I bought a domain name for my small business the other day and am ready to begin building my website. However, I’m a little stuck in finding a good, reputable web host that is free and will allow me to use the already purchased domain name. Storage and size are not an issue – most of my images will be hosted off-site anyways. Any suggestions, Yahoo community?

I have a site that offers unlimited web hosting all for free. No doubt you can add your own domain name too.
Check here http://www.musicbid.co.cc/2011/05/free-unlimited-web-hosting-with-cpanel.html to get free web hosting and http://www.meronagar.com is a site hosted in this free domain.See example.
This will help you for free as this is add free.

After all the negotiations, how does the buy actually get the new domain name?

Depends on how you bought it. For instance if you used GoDaddy auctions, all their transactions over a certain price automatically go through an Escrow service ie. a third party takes control of the domain and takes your money – then they give your money to the seller and pass on the domain to you.
Otherwise, you need to be able to trust the seller to hand the domain over (This is why Escrow services are used). The simplest way I can think of is that the owner tells his registrar that he is going to move the domain to your registration service. I think they will then issue him with a release code. You go to your registration service (I use 1and1 internet) and tell them you want to add this domain to your account. They will ask if you are entitled to take control of it – it should be a simple process of giving them the release code and they will transfer it to your account.
After that you can do what you want with it….
Not done this myself, but have registered plenty of domains from scratch, and transferred my own domains to different registration services.

When you purchase a domain name from an online registrar, this guarantees that you will be the sole user of that name for as long as you keep it registered. So every year you need to renew the registration to be the sole owner of the domain name.

I’m starting a non-profit graphic design website, and I was wondering what some ways are to get a free domain name for the site. Can I get a .com domain for free, is .net free, or would I have to do something else? Any information you have would be great.

If you want a top-level domain name (.com/.net/.org/etc.), you will have to purchase one for $10 a year. Unless someone you know gives you one as a gift, you are not going to be able to get one for free.

Every single domain name has to be purchased. Because of this, there is no such thing as a site/company that gives away domain names. The cost to upkeep such a site would be too high. It would be the equivalent to a person earning $25,000 a year trying to pay off a $1,000,000 mortgage. Yikes, right?

Don’t forget that you will also have to pay anywhere from $25 to $100+ a year for hosting. Mine was on the low end because I did not need a lot of space. If you are in need of a large amount of space and you have high expectations, then expect to pay at least $100+ a year.

I know that you are overwhelmed at the costs, but it is what it is. There is an upside though. Unlike free domain names, free domain hosting does exist. The problem is that you will probably get ads, a small amount of space and bandwidth, limited features and the risk that the site might close down. In other words, it will not be the same as paid hosting. This is the absolute cheapest way to get a site with a domain name though because all you would need to pay is $10 a year for the domain name.

You can only get a free domain when you subscribe to a web hosting that offers free domain name registration in their hosting package. Try look for one at http://www.domainnamesregistration.org/.

I have had a lot of success with http://www.godaddy.com/default.aspx. Depending on the domain name, most of them are in the $1 – $10 range for a year. You can search and make sure the domain is available, and then do the transaction right there. They will even host the site for you if you need it, but if you have another website, that is probably not needed. Hope that is helpful.

But if you do qualify for a .edu (Only U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited by an agency on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies) the only place to get those is at http://net.educause.edu/edudomain/
