Is a domain name that much better than a subdomain?

I have not yet gotten a domain name and am wondering if it is worth it to get one or just sitck with a subdomain. Does it really help site traffic? Thanks for your time.

It won’t make a lot of difference to the search engines. The domain name is just one of many factors that search engines consider for a site’s position in their results but the second level domain can help a little over the third level (subdomain) domain

Depends on your use of the domain.

If it’s for a personal site and it’s not a real long name then it probably makes little difference.

If it’s for a business site then a subdomain just doesn’t look nearly as professional unless you also have the domain itself. That can have an effect on traffic.

A domain name will always be a better investment than a subdomain.
