What is a Domain name and what is the difference between the Domain name and a Website.?

This is all new to me and a little hard to figure some things out, but I am assuming that what ever name you pick for your website will be your Domain name after you register your Website. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Domain name is just like a company name. In internet it will be start with www. ABC.com

"ABC" can be a company name or any words related to your business.

To create a website, you need a domain name and web hosting to start. In other words, to have a website you must have a domain name and web hosting.

Anything missing,you can’t have a website.

Hope this help!

A domain name is the address such as http://www.xxx.com. A website is the physical page that the domain name points to. There are usually many pages within a domain such as http://www.xxx.com/page1.html. If no page is indicated then the default is http://www.xxx.com/index.html.

You are right about registering a domain. If you use a site such as Geocities you can use their’s. You get a name such as http://www.geocities.com/username/index.html. Index.html would be the home page and you can then add many others. Someone going to your site would type http://www.geocities.com/username and it would go to index.html by default.

The domain name is attached to the IP address by the registrar the website could exist without a DN but nobody would be able to find it.

An analogy is this your house is like a website, it has an address which is like an IP address, but until you are in the telephone service directory which is like a domain name registration no one will call.

The analogy is not perfect, but I hope it helps.

Everyone’s given some good descriptive answers so far.

But your domain name should not always be your website name. If you are just a small time site selling something local, your domain name should match the keywords that a websurfer would type into a search engine if looking for your product or service in your local area. Having this type of domain name in this type of situation may give you an extra point or two over your competitior in a search engine and list you higher in a search results, thereby increasing the likelyhood of getting the click.

For example, my site is http://www.a-body-for-living.com/
though my website name is different. If I’d thought things-out a little better beforehand, I would have named my site massagetherapistinmelbournefl.com because people are more likely to have gone searching with keywords such as "massage therapist in Melbourne FL" rather than "A Body for Living"

It’s a small point, but may be one way to score just a bit higher in the search engines than your competitor.
