What is the best site to get a domain name?
I am starting up a webiste and want to own the rights to my domain name. I have no idea which site is better. I have started building my website on wix.com and want to continue to use it or should I switch to whoever I buy the domaain name through. I am very confused on domain names. I am not sure how it works either.
Don’t choose godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.
You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:
http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st
Only $3.95 /month (with discount coupon)
They also offer "Free Site Builder" that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). You can use this service optionally. You can also create the pages offline with your favorite program (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, Microsoft Publisher, iWeb etc.), and then upload them to your web host. This is another easy way to get your website online.

You cant buy a name, its a ‘lease’ or ‘rental’ process, as each year you have to pay a fee to use and to keep the name. so no matter where you go, the purchase/ownership process remain the same.
I use http://www.one.com for most of my personal web/emails, it works really well and their prices are great also.

I think, Netfirms is the best. Domain registration only costs $7.99 for a year.

I use GoDaddy as well. Godaddy is humungous. Their website is so extensive that sometimes I get lost. They offer so many different services that sometimes it takes awhile to accomplish something simple. They are getting too complex, too big.
Netfirms is a simple site, and I have no trouble navigating through their site.

I’ll give you a brief explanation.
- Domain names (www.abc.com etc) are owned by ICANN – an organisation.
- You can rent a domain name from "registrars" (think of them as middlemen between ICANN and you) by paying an yearly fee to the registrar.
- As long as you rent the domain name (by paying fees every year), nobody but you have the right to use that domain name.
Other things.
1. Go ahead and complete your site on wix.com.
2. Get a domain name. Check out:
http://hosting4beginners.webnode.com/cheap-domain-registration/
I recommend NF too.
3. Point your domain name to your wix site.
Hope that helps. All the best.

Wix looks like a great service, however they make you pay by the looks of it – I had a quick look at their hosting costs – the basic package is $4.95 per month and that’s with their ads on your site! – OK they have some flashy looking templates, but to get rid of the ads, they demand $9.90 per month and make out that they have cut it down from $14.90 – not only that but they don’t provide email!!
My advice is that you get into WordPress – you could even start by having a free site at WordPress.com before branching out into your own hosted site. I have a hosting service that allows me as many WordPress sites as I want for $3.99 per month – I started three as an experiment the other day, I could add another twelve tonight if I wanted at no additional cost at all!!
Domains are separate to hosting, and I have written about the services that I use here:
http://www.livewyre.net/cheapwebhosting.php
I use webhostingpad, and the beauty of what they offer is that they have a truly ‘unlimited’ package which includes a domain with the initial purchase. Starting a WordPress site could not be easier – from the hosting dashboard, you click on the ‘fantastico’ icon, and then ‘wordpress’ ‘Drupal’ or ‘Joomla’ or any of a whole host of different site-building tools.. and it automatically installs them for you.
You can buy separate domains for each site, or run them on (free) subdomains of your main site. EG. if you had the domain: blahblah.com as your main domain, you can start free sites in subdomains such as:
blog.blahblah.com
thoughts.blahblah.com
shop.blahblah.com etc….
As for buying domain , I use a couple of different suppliers depending on the type of domain, the article above should explain a little more about the relationship between hosting and domains…
