How do i set up my website hosting and domain together?
I recently purchased both website hosting and a domain (.co.uk)
How do i set my hosting and domain together?
Ive never owned a website before?
If you purchased domain and hosting same time from the same provider, it is possible they make the necessary configuration to activate your domain and hosting. But if you purchased domain and hosting from different providers then you need to change the NS records of your domain pointing to your hosting server. If you make the situation clear I can better help.

It depends on what service you used to buy the domain name. Usually your provider will walk you through connecting a domain name with hosting space

Hi,
If you have purchased the domain name and hosting from the same provider, then your account is already setup. You just need to put some html or any other like php, jsp,etc files in you root directory of the hosting account.
You have to put the files in public_html directory of the hosting account for those files to be rendered when your website url is hit.
say for eg. Your website address http://xyz.co.uk/
your hosting account directory structure would look something like this.
/public_html — place some html/equivalent files here.
/www
/public_ftp
could be a bit different in your case but nevertheless concept remains the same.
So whenever you hit xyz.co.uk, the files put in public_html directory would be picked and rendered.
Have you purchased the hosting account and domain seperately from different service providers..?
Here is what you can do.
Login to domain(.co.uk) account. Look for the option which lets you to configure your domain. It would look something like this: domain settings/domain management/domain setup (It may differ in your case but usually it would be something similar to this)
Just set up the domain using one of the following methods.
Name server — These values would be given by your web host
Zone Records — These values again would be given by web host.(these would be MX, A, CNAME, TXT)
URL fowarding — Perhaps, this is the most easiest one. Just give the url of your website(i.e. the uri of the root directory of your hosting account)
There may be other methods also depending on the service provider
Let me give an example:
I’ve registered free domain http://www.xyz.co.cc
Next, I’ve registered some free web space with one of the hosting provider and the internet address given by my host for my account is xyz.myhostingprovider.com.
To setup the account, i would do as follows:
login to "www.xyz.co.cc" account
and choose url forwarding option in domain set up and give the url to which to forward the request as "xyz.myhostingprovider.com"
Thats all. So whenever you type http://www.xyz.co.cc, the index.html file present in the public_html directory of the xyz.myhostingprovider account would be picked up and rendered.
Let me know if you need any further clarifications.

Depends on who holds the domain for you, but you want to change the DNS settings to ‘point’ at your nameservers for the service that is doing the hosting for you. You can either use the nameservers or the IP address of your host server. The nameservers should ‘send’ traffic for your domain to the correct folder on the server that holds your site files.
If you have cpanel on your hosting, you may be able to add the domain via the cpanel – this will tell the nameservers where to ‘find’ the right folder on your host server, otherwise you may need to let your hosting service know what domain you are going to use.
I use separate hosting and domain registration services and wrote a short article about it (link below)
